Plot: In 1919, Hungarian Communists aid the Bolsheviks' defeat of Czarists, the Whites. Near the Volga, a monastery and a field hospital are held by one side then the other. Captives are executed or sent running naked into the woods. Neither side has a plan, and characters the camera picks out soon die. A White Cossack officer kills a Hungarian and is executed by his own superiors when he tries to rape a milkmaid. At the hospital, White officers order nurses into the woods, dressed in finery, to waltz. A nurse aids the Reds, then they accuse her of treason for following White orders. Red soldiers walk willingly, singing, into an overwhelming force. War seems chaotic and arbitrary.

Plot: Approaching his senior years, widowed Manbei Kohayagawa is the owner of a small family run sake brewery in Kyoto. Hisao, his daughter Fumiko's husband, works for the company. Another daughter, Osaka based Akiko, who works at an art gallery, is widowed, her deceased husband who decided not to work in the family business, but maintain his own career as a college professor. Kohayagawa's third and last daughter, Noriko, a clerk in an office, has never been married, but is now of marrying age. Because the business is not doing well as it cannot compete with the larger sake companies, Kohayagawa wants to ensure that all his daughters are taken care of financially, which means finding husbands for both Akiko and Noriko, that task which is aided by Kohayagawa's younger brother-in-law, Yanosuke Kitagawa. Storyline:
In the Sahara, at an oil pipeline  pumping station belonging to Medina Oil Company, five technicians man  the facility. Kramer, a German, is the foreman. Two Brits, Fletcher and  Macey, and Santos, a Hispanic, are the other employees. The fifth man, a  German named Martin, arrives as a replacement for another man, possibly  killed in a work accident, whose dead body is shipped out in a coffin  in the beginning. The replacement worker is picked up in the nearest  town by a company shuttle truck that also delivers mail, food, fuel and  supplies to the pumping station. It's a three-day ride from town to the  station. Being isolated, the arrival of visitors and supplies to the  station is a real treat to the workers. After the replacement man's  arrival and the mandatory introductions, the crew continues its  routinely monotonous existence. During their time off work, the  technicians fantasize about women, trade stories from their pasts, play  poker or annoy each other with irritating behaviors. They ...
